Dr. Miller was born in Virginia while his father served in the Army at Fort Gregg-Adams. Soon after Dr. Miller's birth, his father was honorably discharged, and the family moved to Norristown, Pennsylvania. His father worked as a research chemist for the Department of Agriculture for the next 40 years, and his mother worked as a bookkeeper.
After graduating from high school, Dr. Miller completed his undergraduate degree in Secondary Education in English (BA) from the University of Pittsburgh, a master’s degree (MS) in psychology from Shippensburg University and a doctorate in clinical psychology (Ph.D.) from the California Institute of Integral Studies. He is licensed in Virginia as a professional counselor (LPC) and certified as a substance abuse counselor (CSAC).
For the past eight years Dr. Miller has been serving as a Professional Counselor at Brightpoint Community College. Prior to this position he worked for a short time for Good Neighbor Community Services and for Chesterfield Mental Health for thirteen years, first as a Senior Clinician and then promoted to Services Supervisor assisting individuals diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Dr. Miller was named "Employee of the Year" for Chesterfield Mental Health in 2007. Prior to working for Chesterfield Mental Health, he served as a drug treatment counselor for Chippenham Hospital's Tucker Pavilion.
Prior to living in Virginia, Dr. Miller served as a high school English teacher for the Pittsburgh Public Schools as a long-term substitute, and a drug treatment counselor for the New Bridge Foundation located in Berkeley, California.
Dr. Miller has lived in Midlothian, Virginia for the past twenty-five years with his wife, Jennifer, their two adult daughters and their three cats.
