Chesterfield County is a first choice community in part because of the many citizens who volunteer their time and talents to the county. The county receives valuable guidance from citizens who serve on a number of boards and commissions. Below is a list of Boards and Commissions relative to the work of the Planning Department.

Board of Zoning Appeals
The Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) is a citizen board appointed by the Circuit Court to hear petition requests for special exceptions (which include temporary manufactured home requests and their renewals, private kennel requests, and one-chair beauty shop requests) and variance requests (which include height exception, no public road frontage exceptions and exceptions for lot width). The BZA also hears appeals from Planning director decisions regarding administrative variances or the interpretation of the zoning ordinance.

Planning Commission
The Planning Commission advises the Board of Supervisors on zoning cases, amendments to the zoning and subdivision ordinance and comprehensive planning.

Preservation Committee
The Preservation Committee reviews and comments on applications for historic sites or districts. Once a local landmark has been designated by the Board of Supervisors, the Committee reviews all changes (other than routine maintenance) to the exterior of the building of site.
