Curbside Recycling Transition
As a regional leader in environmental stewardship, Chesterfield advocates, along with Central Virginia Waste Management Authority (CVWMA) and our regional partners, for reduction and reuse strategies to lower solid waste generated. The county recognizes the importance of recycling and its effectiveness in reducing the volume of household waste that ends up in landfills and desires a robust recycling program available to all citizens predicated upon multiple choices at the lowest price possible. Given this, Chesterfield is transitioning to a curbside recycling collection model where citizens can work directly with private haulers for recycling collection, like they currently do for trash services.
Private Hauler Options
Chesterfield’s contract with CVWMA for curbside recycling services ends on Saturday, July 1, 2023. Residents and businesses may begin transitioning to private haulers at any time by contacting their preferred hauler. The following companies have indicated that they will provide curbside recycling, to include provision of containers for their service:
- Choice Waste Services or call 804-234-4444 (Currently Available)
- GFL Environmental or call 804-843-9288 (Currently Available)
- Tidewater Fibre Corporation (TFC) Recycling or call 804-706-5877 (Beginning July 1, 2023)
- Waste Management - call 800-834-2805 (Beginning Spring 2023)
- Zan's Refuse Service, Inc or call 804-897-1338 (Beginning June 1, 2023)
Each hauler will provide instructions regarding existing containers. Containers no longer needed can be brought to a Chesterfield Convenience Center at no cost for recycling.
Avoid Fee by Opting Out
Please be advised that the $20.50 fee (half of the $41 annual fee) will be charged in June 2023 for recycling services provided from Jan. 1 to June 30, 2023. If property owners wish to avoid this fee, opt out of the program by Wednesday, March 1, 2023, by calling 804-748-1297 or by completing the Chesterfield Curbside Recycling Opt Out form.
Current Central Virginia Waste Management Authority Program
Chesterfield County currently offers a biweekly curbside recycling program to more than 94,000 homes via a service agreement with the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority and their contracted hauler Tidewater Fibre Corporation (TFC). This program allows residents to recycle paper, cardboard, glass and plastic in a single container, while deferring waste from local landfills. To check your recycling day, visit the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority (CVWMA) residential recycling webpage.
There is an annual fee of $41 (equals $3.42 per month) which is applied to each household that enrolls in the program. This fee will be included on the county’s real estate tax bill, with $20.50 charged in December and the other $20.50 charged in June each year.
Residents who decide to opt-out of the program may call 804-748-1297 or complete the Chesterfield Curbside Recycling Opt Out form. Residents who opt out of the program are not required to pay the $41 fee.
If you live in a single-family home and wish to participate in the county’s curbside recycling program, you can opt-in by contacting the Customer Service Center at 804-748-1297. Please contact the CVWMA at 804-340-0900 to purchase a cart/bin or request free recycling stickers for containers you own. Please note: this program is ending on Saturday, July 1, 2023.
