Community Outreach Programs
Increasing Public Awareness
One of Chesterfield County’s strategic goals is to increase public awareness and participation in the public safety system. In support of this goal, Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office offers a variety of community outreach programs. Chesterfield TRIAD
The Chesterfield TRIAD gives seniors a voice when it comes to their personal safety and security and offers them an opportunity to socialize while learning ways to be safe and secure.
File of Life and Yellow Dot
The File of Life information card is held inside a magnetic red vinyl sleeve marked File of Life, which the user posts on the refrigerator. The Yellow Dot program is a similar safety program designed to save you valuable time in the event of an automobile-related incident.
Concealed Carry and Handgun Safety
Concealed carry and handgun safety courses are offered by our certified firearms instructors on the fourth Wednesday of January, March, May, July, September and November. The class time is from 6 to 9 p.m. Class size is limited to 30 students and a reservation is required.
Courthouse and County Jail Tours
These guided tours offer individuals and groups the opportunity to go behind the scenes and learn the functions of our county court and criminal justice system.
Honor Guard
The Honor Guard represents the members of the Sheriff's Office at special occasions such as parades, organized events, etc. The Honor Guard proudly displays our Nation’s colors and renders proper ceremonial honors for fallen members of our law enforcement community and civic leaders.
Hunter Safety Course
A hunters safety education course is mandatory for issuance of a first-time hunter's license in Virginia. The Sheriff's Office hunter safety course is a free, in-person course that runs two consecutive nights. This course, offered by request, has been available since 1992. Alternatively, hunters education courses are available online via the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources.
Inmate Outreach Program
By the request of school systems, the inmate outreach program offers students the opportunity to listen to the personal story of a current county jail inmate. The inmate will share their choices and the related consequences with the goal of preventing and changing negative behaviors and lifestyles.
Juvenile Outreach Learning Tour (JOLT)
The Juvenile Outreach Learning Tour (JOLT) provides juveniles and young adults exposure to inmate living conditions, visitation, kitchen, property storage and daily life in the county jail while emphasizing the restrictions that are imposed on those who are incarcerated in our facility. This in-person tour of the county jail can be requested by parents and guardians of juveniles and young adults.
Seniors-In-Touch
Seniors qualified for the Seniors-In-Touch program receive daily phone calls from Sheriff’s Office personnel for updates on daily events, health and needs as well as weekly deputy visits. The following are the general qualifications for participation in the Seniors-In-Touch program:
- Chesterfield County resident
- Age 65 or older
- Limited mobility
- Has some health issues or medical needs
- Lack of family members living in close proximity (within 30 miles) to applicant's residence (this requirement may be waived based on the age, physical capabilities, etc., of family members)
- Lacks strong support from civic or religious organization
