CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA – Chesterfield County Police have charged a woman with felony murder in relation to the death of a child that occurred on Nov. 14, 2020, in the 8800 block of Jefferson Davis Highway.
On Nov. 14, 2020, police and rescue personnel responded to a motel room in the 8800 block of Jefferson Davis Highway for a report that a 2-year-old male had been found unresponsive. The child, identified as Kruz Rivera, was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner completed an autopsy and toxicology analysis of Kruz's remains. The results revealed that Kruz died as a result of methadone toxicity.
On June 2, 2021, Sherrell M. Rivera, 31, was arrested and charged with felony abuse and neglect of children in relation to Kruz's death. Rivera, of the 8800 block of Jefferson Davis Highway, is Kruz's mother.
On June 30, following further investigation, detectives obtained a warrant for Rivera for felony murder in relation to Kruz's death. Rivera, who was already in custody at Riverside Regional Jail, was served with the felony murder warrant today, July 1.
