CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA – Chesterfield County Police recently completed a traffic enforcement operation in connection with its "In Memory Of" campaign.
From Jan. 31 through Feb. 5, traffic enforcement efforts focused on distracted driving, seat belt use, speeding and impaired driving in memory of Carlos Pereira III, who died in a crash on June 26, 2021. The investigation indicates Pereira was distracted by his phone and not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. At the start of the campaign, police released a video featuring an interview with Elizabeth Rosario, Carlos' mother, in which she describes the impact and aftermath of losing her son.
During the operation, police stopped a total of 433 vehicles. Police issued more than 450 summonses for a variety of traffic-related offenses, including 30 summonses for seat belt violations and 19 summonses for hands-free law violations. Officers also handed out 83 pedestrian safety cards during 89 pedestrian safety talks with community members.
As always, police encourage all motorists to buckle up and drive safely and all pedestrians to be visible to drivers, wear reflective clothing, carry a flashlight and cross the roadway in well-lit areas.
