CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA – Police have arrested one man and are seeking a second man involved in an Aug. 13, 2018, attempted bank robbery.
At about 4:15 p.m. on Aug. 13, police said, a man entered the First Citizens Bank at 13101 Midlothian Turnpike, approached an employee and passed a note demanding money. Another employee, who was unaware of the note, asked the man to remove his sunglasses. The man then took the note and left the bank without receiving any cash. The suspect was seen walking toward the nearby American Family Fitness.
Through investigation, detectives determined that the same suspect visited the First Community Bank in the 14400 block of Sommerville Court on July 23, 2018, under the pretense of opening an account. On July 24, another unknown male entered this bank and appeared nervous while speaking with a teller. When asked for his identification, the man left the bank. Shortly after he left, a witness saw two suspicious men crouching near the bank and attempting to conceal their faces. When noticed, the men fled.
The investigation indicates that the man who entered the First Community Bank on July 24, 2018, returned on Aug. 13, 2018, and asked for directions. Bank personnel recognized him and locked the bank’s exterior doors after his departure. Shortly after they locked the doors, another man attempted to enter the bank.
The investigation indicates that within hours of this suspicious behavior at First Community Bank on Aug. 13, these two suspects were involved in the attempted robbery at First Citizens Bank.
Last month, detectives obtained warrants for Hassan M. Corbin, 35, of the 100 block of West 24th Street in Richmond, and Gerard A. Hargrove, 43, of the 1800 block of Stockton Street in Richmond, in relation to the incidents. Corbin, who was charged with attempted robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery, was arrested on Sept. 24, 2018. The investigation indicates that Corbin entered and attempted to rob the First Citizens Bank on Aug. 13.
Police obtained warrants for Hargrove for two counts of conspiracy to commit robbery. Police continue to seek Hargrove, and ask that anyone with information about his whereabouts contact the Chesterfield County Police Department at 804-748-1251 or Crime Solvers at 804-748-0660 or through the P3 app.
