Cooperative Extension Office

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA —  Back by popular demand, the Chesterfield County Cooperative Extension Office is gearing up for spring and summer with a pair of programs aimed at helping residents get their gardens and yards in shape: Grass Roots and Learn Your Landscape.

Grass Roots Program

If you are frustrated with the condition of your lawn or tired of throwing away money on seed and fertilizer only to see no improvements, you can get to the root of the problem through the Grass Roots Program!

Grass Roots is designed to offer homeowners an individualized plan for establishing and maintaining a healthy lawn while also protecting the watershed.

All participants receive a home visit from a Master Gardener volunteer who will measure the square footage of their yard, examine other aspects of the lawn and take a soil sample. Once the soil sample is analyzed, a certified nutrient management plan will be developed for the homeowner. Each plan includes helpful information about soil compaction, fertilization needs and weed control. In addition to the personalized plan, homeowners will receive publications on lawn care in our area that are referenced throughout the report.

The program costs $25, including one soil sample. Additional samples are $11 each. To register, complete the Grass Roots Registration Form and mail with payment to the Chesterfield Cooperative Extension Office (P.O. Box 14. Chesterfield, VA 23832).  Space is limited to first come first serve basis so you must have payment with the form to be registered.

Learn Your Landscape Program

The Learn Your Landscape assists homeowners in meeting any healthy and sustainable landscape goals!

Participants receive recommendations on the care and maintenance of their existing landscape as well as information on how to improve it through sustainable practices, based on guidelines established by Virginia Cooperative Extension. The homeowner will meet with two Master Gardeners for a one-and-a-half-hour site evaluation to understand their needs and interests. The Master Gardeners will research and prepare recommendations that will be presented at a final follow-up meeting where the homeowner will receive a three-ringed binder that includes a written Client Report providing specific recommendations to meet their objective. The binder will also include guidance on plant selection, planting, maintenance, pruning, use of pesticides and plant problem diagnosis.

The program cost is $30, which covers the cost of supplies, materials and personalized guide. A limited number of registrations are accepted, so register early if you would like to take part. Cooperative Extension must receive your Learn Your Landscape Registration Form and payment to be registered.
