1. How do I adopt an animal?

The animal shelter has a large variety of dogs and cats available for adoption. Please visit the Adopt a Pet section for detailed information about the adoption process.

2. Do I need a dog license?

Any dog 4 months of age or older must have a license.

3. What will I need to purchase a dog license?

To obtain a dog license, you must:

• Pay the $10 license tax
• Provide a certificate of current rabies vaccination

4. How much does a dog license cost, and when is it due?

Chesterfield County now offers a lifetime dog license for $10. The license will remain valid as long as the dog's rabies vaccination is kept up to date.

Kennel licenses are available for those residing in an agricultural district who own more than 3 dogs. Kennel licenses are still issued annually. The license tax is payable on January 1 and must be paid no later than January 31 of each year.

The fees are as follows:

• Kennel – up to 20 dogs: $25
• Kennel – up to 50 dogs: $35

5. Where do I get a dog license?

You can obtain a dog license at several county businesses, or by mail.

To obtain a dog license by mail:

• Print and complete a Dog License Application (PDF). View a Sample Form (DOC).
• Include the completed license application, a copy of the rabies certificate, proof that the dog has been spayed/neutered (if applicable) and check or money order payable to Treasurer, Chesterfield County.

6. How do I report a lost pet?

If your dog or cat is lost:

• Submit a Lost Pet Report.
• Visit the shelter to look for your pet and review the lost and found pets book at the front desk.
• Post signs in your area in the event someone has found your pet.

If you find a dog or cat:

• Submit a Found Pet Report.
• Visit the shelter to review the lost and found pets book at the front desk.
• Post signs in your area in the event someone near you may be looking for their pet.

8. How do I report animal cruelty or neglect?

Please call the 804-748-1251, the police non-emergency number, if you need to speak with an Animal Services officer about:

• Animal neglect or cruelty
• Dogs running at large
• Stray dog that has been found
• Any other non-emergency Animal Services issue

If you wish to speak with a shelter representative, please call 804-748-1683 Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Animal Services does not handle calls for service related to barking dogs. Please call the police non-emergency number, 804-748-1251, to speak to a police officer.

9. How many dogs can you have in Chesterfield?

Ownership of more than three adult dogs per family is prohibited in any residential district without a special exception permit. If you need a special permit, contact the Chesterfield County Zoning Office at 804-748-1050.

10. What is Chesterfield County’s leash law?

Under Chesterfield County's current leash law, a dog shall be deemed to run at large while roaming or running off the property of its owner or custodian and not under its owner's or custodian's immediate control.
