History
Gates' Mill operated on the north bank Falling Creek from 1800 to the 1870's as part of William Beverly Gates' 1,002-acre Seguine Plantation. A typical small Virginia plantation gristmill, Gates' Mill could grind 3-4 bushels of wheat per hour and provided milling services for both Seguine and local farmers. When Gates' descendants sold the mill after the Civil War, it operated sporadically until the early 1900's as a farm mill for Shady Springs (1888) and Meadowbrook (1918), summer retreats for wealth Richmond businessmen Howard Swineford and Thomas Jeffress, respectively.
